Itinerary – 5 Days Tour From Fes to Marrakech
Day 1: Fes – Ifrane – Azrou – Midelt – Ziz Valley – Merzouga (~ 460km)
The journey begins with a morning departure from Fes and a drive through the Middle Atlas Mountains. A stop in Ifrane, often called “Little Switzerland,” allows you to admire its European-style architecture and immaculate gardens.
Next, continue to Azrou, where the cedar forests provide an opportunity to observe indigenous Barbary macaques in their natural habitat.
Then, the route leads to Midelt, which is nestled between the Middle and High Atlas ranges and is known for its apple orchards. After lunch, the journey continues through the Ziz Valley, where date palms line the canyon floor, offering picturesque views. Late in the afternoon, you will arrive in Merzouga, where you will embark on a camel trek into the Erg Chebbi dunes.
As the sun sets, the sands glow with hues of gold and crimson. You will then be led to a desert camp for an overnight stay under the star-studded sky.
Day 2: Merzouga Desert Exploration (~ 45km)
Wake up early to witness the breathtaking sunrise over the undulating dunes of the Sahara. After breakfast at the camp, go on a 4×4 excursion to explore the surrounding desert.
Visit the village of Khamlia, home to the descendants of Sub-Saharan Africans, and experience the soulful rhythms of Gnawa music. Then, continue to the Mifis Mines to learn about local mineral extraction practices.
A visit with a nomadic family provides a glimpse into traditional desert life and an opportunity to share mint tea and learn about their customs.
In the afternoon, return to Merzouga to relax or enjoy optional activities such as quad biking or sandboarding. As evening falls, enjoy dinner at a comfortable desert camp and gaze at the Milky Way illuminating the night sky.
Day 3: Merzouga – Rissani – Todra Gorge – Dades Valley (~ 255km)
After breakfast, leave Merzouga and head to Rissani, which is known for its bustling souk and its role as a former caravan center.
Then, continue to the Todra Gorge, where 300-meter-tall limestone cliffs tower over a crystal-clear river — an ideal spot for a scenic walk.
