Tour Highlights

Itinerary – 4 Days from Fes to Marrakech Desert Tour

Day 1: Fes → Azrou → Midelt → Ziz Valley → Merzouga (≈470 km, ~7 h)

The journey begins with a drive through the Middle Atlas Mountains, departing from Fes at 8 AM. Stop in Azrou to walk through the cedar forests, home to the indigenous Barbary macaques.

Then, continue to Midelt, known as the “Apple Capital” of Morocco, and enjoy a lunch break amidst the scenic highlands. In the afternoon, the drive descends into the Ziz Valley, where a ribbon of date palms lines the canyon floor, offering picturesque views.

Arrive in Merzouga by late afternoon, where a camel trek awaits to carry you into the Erg Chebbi dunes. As the sun sets, the golden and crimson hues of the dunes will lead you to a desert camp where you will spend the night under the starry sky.

Awake early to witness a breathtaking Sahara sunrise over the undulating dunes. After breakfast at the camp, visit the village of Khamlia, inhabited by descendants of Sub-Saharan Africans, to experience the soulful rhythms of Gnawa music.  The journey continues to the Mifis Mines, offering insight into local mineral extraction practices.

In the afternoon, embark on a 4×4 excursion across hidden desert tracks, perhaps pausing for mint tea with nomadic families and trying your hand at sandboarding. Return to the camp for dinner and an evening of traditional drumming beneath the Milky Way.

After breakfast, leave Merzouga and head to Rissani, which is known for its bustling souk and its role as a former caravan center.

Then, continue to the Todra Gorge, where 300-meter-tall limestone cliffs tower over a crystal-clear river — an ideal spot for a scenic walk.

After lunch, travel along the “Road of a Thousand Kasbahs” and witness the iconic “Monkey Fingers” rock formations. End the day in the Dades Valley by settling into a cliffside riad that offers panoramic views of the surrounding landscapes.

Depart the Dades Valley and travel to Ouarzazate, often referred to as the “Gateway to the Sahara,” where a visit to the historic Taourirt Kasbah provides a glimpse into Morocco’s architectural heritage.

Proceed to the UNESCO World Heritage site of Aït Ben Haddou, a fortified village renowned for its earthen clay architecture and cinematic history.

After exploring the ksar, cross the High Atlas Mountains via the Tizi n’Tichka Pass, offering stunning vistas, before descending into Marrakech by early evening, concluding your Moroccan desert odyssey.
