Tour Highlights

Itinerary – 3 Days from Fes to Merzouga Desert tour

Day 1: Fes → Azrou → Midelt → Erfoud → Merzouga (≈467 km, ~7 h)

Departing from Fez at dawn, you will traverse the Middle Atlas Mountains and stop first in Ifrane, often dubbed the “Switzerland of Morocco” because of its alpine-style architecture and clean streets.

Then, you enter the cedar forests near Azrou, home to the indigenous Barbary macaques. Then, the journey leads you through the Ziz Valley, where a ribbon of palm oases contrasts starkly with the surrounding arid landscapes.

After a lunch break in Midelt, known for its apple orchards, you will proceed to Erfoud. This town is renowned for its fossil workshops that transform ancient marine relics into art.

By late afternoon, you will arrive at the edge of the Erg Chebbi dunes in Merzouga. There, you will mount a camel and trek into the vast sea of sand to witness the sunset over the golden dunes.

You spend the evening in a traditional desert camp, enjoying a hearty Moroccan dinner accompanied by Berber drumming under the starlit sky.

Wake up early to witness the breathtaking sunrise over the dunes as the first light of day paints the sands with golden and rosy hues. After breakfast at the camp, embark on a 4×4 excursion to explore the surrounding desert.

Your first stop is a nomadic encampment where you are welcomed into traditional tents and offered mint tea, a gesture of hospitality.

Interacting with the nomads offers insight into their resilient way of life, which is shaped by the harsh yet beautiful Saharan environment. Next, visit Khamlia village, home to descendants of sub-Saharan Africans, particularly from Mali.

There, you will experience a live performance of traditional Gnawa music, characterized by its hypnotic rhythms and spiritual chants. Afterward, you have free time to enjoy lunch at a local restaurant.

In the afternoon, take a stroll through a nearby palm grove for a refreshing change of pace from the desert sands. The day concludes with a visit to seasonal Merzouga Lake, also known as Flamingo Lake.

Depending on the time of year, you may see a variety of bird species, including flamingos. As evening falls, you will return to your hotel in Merzouga for dinner and an overnight stay.

After breakfast, depart Merzouga and head to Rissani, a town known for its bustling market where locals trade spices, textiles, and traditional crafts.

The market offers a glimpse into the region’s rich cultural tapestry. Next, you will revisit Erfoud to take one last look at its fossil workshops.

Then, the route takes you back through the Ziz Valley, where you can enjoy panoramic views of lush palm groves.

You will stop for lunch in Midelt, which will give you a chance to relax before ascending once more into the cedar forests near Azrou. Keep an eye out for Barbary macaques along the way. By early evening, you will arrive back in Fes, concluding your immersive desert adventure.
