Itinerary – 3 Days tour from Marrakech to Fes
Day 1: Marrakech → Tizi n’Tichka – Aït Benhaddou → Skoura → Dades Gorge
Total driving distance: ~360 km
Total driving time (excluding stops): ~7 hours
Morning: Marrakech to Aït Benhaddou (180 km – ~4 hours drive) Your driver will pick you up from your hotel or riad in Marrakech around 8:00 am. The trip begins with an ascent into the High Atlas via the Tizi n’Tichka pass (2,212 meters), the highest paved mountain pass in Morocco.
Expect panoramic views, picturesque Berber villages built into the red and green slopes, and opportunities for photo stops at viewpoints such as Taddart and Telouet.
Stop for lunch: Ouarzazate or Telouet. After crossing the pass, you can stop for lunch in Ouarzazate (often called the “Hollywood of Morocco”) or in the quieter village of Telouet, known for its historic Telouet Kasbah (optional visit). Meals typically include tagines or grilled meats, with vegetarian options available.
Early afternoon: Aït Benhaddou (30 km from Ouarzazate – ~45 min) You’ll visit the Ksar of Aït Benhaddou, a fortified village and UNESCO World Heritage Site.
It’s a classic example of southern Moroccan architecture and has been used as a filming location for productions such as Gladiator, Game of Thrones, and Lawrence of Arabia. Explore the steep streets, adobe towers, and panoramic views from the top of the hill.
Mid-afternoon: Skoura Oasis and Rose Valley (Aït Benhaddou to Dades – ~150 km, ~3 hours) After Aït Benhaddou, head east to the Skoura Oasis, home to the Kasbah Amridil, one of the best preserved kasbahs in the region (optional short visit/photo stop). Drive through the Valley of the Roses, known for its Damascene rose fields and rose water, and oil cooperatives. The valley is in full bloom in April and May.
Late afternoon: Arrival at the Dades Gorges. Before reaching your accommodation, you’ll pass through Boumalne Dades and enter the Dades valley, also known as the “road of a thousand kasbahs”.
On the way, stop at the iconic Monkey Fingers (Tamlat), named for the finger-like shapes of the eroded cliffs. A short detour leads to a panoramic viewpoint overlooking the serpentine mountain road – a highlight for photographers. Evening: Spend the night in a traditional guesthouse or hotel near Aït Oudinar in the Dades Gorge.
These accommodations often have rooftop terraces with views of the cliffs and valley. Popular places to stay include Hotel Babylon Dades, Dar Essyaha or Riad Rihana Dades, depending on availability and comfort.
Dinner and breakfast are usually included. Expect Moroccan cuisine: harira soup, tajine, couscous and seasonal fruit.
Day 2: Dades Valley → Todra Gorge → Merzouga (Sahara) Distance: ~310 km
Travel time (excluding stops) ~5 h 15 m
Morning: Dades → Todra Gorge Leave your guesthouse in the Dades valley at 8:00 a.m. and follow the “road of the thousand kasbahs”.
After 110 km (≈2 h 15 m), you will reach the Todra Gorge, a dramatic canyon where 300 m high limestone walls frame a narrow riverbed. Stretch your legs on a 1-km walk between towering cliffs, snap photos of date palms clinging to the canyon floor, and explore nearby Berber villages like Tinghir.
Afternoon: Todra → Merzouga (200km – ≈4hrs) By 1 pm, head east through Tinejdad and Erfoud (fossil workshops), stopping for a quick lunch of tagine or fresh salad.
Optional detour to the Rissani souk to see centuries-old Alaouite tombs and traditional markets. After Erfoud, the road opens into the orange sea of the Erg Chebbi dunes.
Arrival in the traditional Amazigh village of Merzouga at 16:00. Your luggage will be transported by 4×4 to the Sahara Stargazer Camp (or similar) on the edge of the dunes – your private tent is ready with a mattress, sheets, and access to hot water.
Camel trek to the dunes. At 5 pm, meet your camel guide for a 1-1.5 hour Merzouga camel trek, following an attractive, winding path through smaller dunes to a high sand ridge.
Feel the heat of the Sahara, watch the sun ignite the Erg Chebbi sands in shades of gold and crimson, and pause at the top for an epic view of the desert sunset.
Return at dusk by camel or on foot along the same route, following camel tracks across the dunes. Evening: Berber Camp Dinner & Music Back at camp, freshen up and gather around a desert fire pit.
Local Amazigh musicians will play drums and handmade string instruments, their rhythms echoing under the starry sky. Retreat to your tent for a night of desert salvation, cocooned by silent dunes and a sky aglow with constellations.
Day 3: Merzouga → Cedar Forest → Fes Total distance: ~445 km
Total driving time: ~8 hours
Awake before dawn to watch the Sahara sunrise over the dunes. As the first rays kiss the sand, you’ll feel calm and exhilaration – warmth spreading across the horizon, the dunes glowing a soft gold, and complete silence broken only by the breeze.
After soaking up this magical moment, return to camp for a hearty Berber breakfast before packing for Fes.
Merzouga to the Ziz valley: Leave your desert camp and head west into the lush Ziz Valley (35km). Palm groves line the canyon floor, and red cliffs rise dramatically on either side. Stop at the Ziz Canyon Viewpoint for a panoramic view of the oasis.
Optional stop: Rissani Souk En route, you can detour to Rissani (10km from Merzouga) for a quick stroll through its authentic market or to search for fossils in a local workshop.
Midelt Lunch Continue through the valley to Midelt (195km from Rissani). Known as the “Apple Valley”, Midelt offers a perfect lunch stop at the Restaurant du Ziz, where tagines, fresh salads, and local breads will fuel you for the afternoon.
Azrou cedar forest. From Midelt, climb the Middle Atlas to reach the Azrou cedar forest (115km). Walk among ancient cedar trees and see wild Barbary macaques playing in their natural habitat.
Ifrane photo stop & Fez arrival. Descend to Ifrane (65km), Morocco’s alpine village, for a quick photo at the lion statue. Then drive the last 60km to Fes, arriving at your hotel, riad, or airport transfer point in the evening.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is this a private tour?
Yes – the 4×4 vehicle and guide are exclusively for your party. You won’t be mixed with strangers. This also means the schedule can be flexible to your group’s pace.
How much driving is there each day?
Expect about 5–6 hours of driving on Day 1 (through the Atlas), 3–4 hours on Day 2 (to Merzouga), and 7–8 hours on Day 3 (desert to Fes). We include rest stops at scenic viewpoints, villages, and meal breaks.
How difficult is the camel trek?
Very gentle – the camels are well-trained and the pace is slow. (about 1–2 hours total) on mostly flat sand. Guides will show you how to mount/dismount safely. If camels bother you, you can always walk part of the way. Or we will take you in a 4 x 4 .
What’s the difference between luxury and standard camps?
Standard camps have sturdy Berber tents with thick mattresses; bathrooms and showers are shared (clean and secure). Luxury camps add amenities like proper beds with linens, private tent bathrooms, and sometimes handwashing stations and power outlets. All camps serve hot meals and tea.
Which meals are included?
We include 2 breakfasts (Marrakech and on Day 3) and 1 dinner (in the Sahara camp on Day 2). All other meals are at your own expense. Your driver can recommend places for lunch or dinner in towns along the route. We provide bottled water in the vehicle and at camp.
What should I pack for the tour?
Bring comfortable trekking shoes (sandals or boots), layered clothing (it can get cold in the desert), a sun hat or scarf, sunglasses, sunscreen, and a light jacket. Don’t forget your camera and extra batteries/memory cards. A small daypack is handy for hikes in Aït Benhaddou or Todra.
Is this tour suitable for children or seniors?
Yes – families and older travelers enjoy it. There’s no age restriction. Kids love the camel ride and camping experience. If traveling with very young children or anyone with mobility issues, let us know so we can accommodate (for example, carrying a toddler or providing extra assistance mounting a camel).
How is the tour priced?
The price depends on your group size and chosen accommodations. Larger groups pay a lower per-person rate. (For example, splitting the cost between 4 people is cheaper per person than for 2.) We’ll quote you based on your group and preferences. Payment is made in cash (USD, EUR, or MAD) to our driver/guide.
Can we customize the itinerary?
Absolutely. This is your private tour, so you can add nights, switch hotels, or include additional stops (like an extra day in Merzouga or a detour to a local market). Just contact us in advance with your ideas. We’re happy to upgrade you to luxury tents, arrange extra cultural activities, or extend the tour anywhere in Morocco.
