Itinerary – 5 Days tour from Marrakech to Merzouga
Day 1: Marrakech → Telouet → Aït Benhaddou → Ouarzazate
Leave the honey-hued alleys of Marrakech behind at dawn, then ascend the High Atlas Mountains via the 7,414-foot Tizi N’Tichka Pass. There, Berber villages cling to the mountain slopes, and panoramic valleys stretch to the horizon.
In Telouet, pause at the crumbling Kasbah Glaoui, once a 19th-century palace of power, before winding down to the ochre walls of Ait Benhaddou. This UNESCO World Heritage Site has starred in Gladiator, Game of Thrones, and countless other epics.
Stroll through its narrow alleyways and marvel at the sun-bleached, mud-brick ramparts. Imagine the camel caravans that once passed through, laden with salt and gold.
Late afternoon will bring you to Ouarzazate, the “Hollywood of Morocco,” where you will spend your first night under clear desert skies at a charming riad near the famous Atlas Studios.
Day 2: Ouarzazate → Draa Valley → Rissani → Erg Chebbi (Merzouga)
After a hearty Moroccan breakfast, journey south through the lush Draa Valley, home to Morocco’s longest river gorge. Endless palm groves and kasbahs line the banks. Then, cross the volcanic foothills into Nkob, home to over a hundred crumbling kasbahs.
Descend to Rissani, the cradle of the Alaouite dynasty, where a bustling souk awaits, offering an opportunity to barter robes, spices, and silver jewelry with nomads. From there, the road fades into golden sands.
By sunset, you will mount camels for a slow trek into the Erg Chebbi dunes. Pause atop a crest to watch fiery reds melt into starlit blues. Dinner and live Berber drumming await you at your luxury desert camp, where fully furnished tents await you for a night under the stars.
Day 3: Merzouga Exploration & Nomad Culture
Awaken to the dawn chorus of the Sahara—the sand rippling like molten gold—and sip mint tea as the sun kisses the horizon. After breakfast, take a 4×4 off-road expedition to Hassi Labiad, a tranquil oasis village.
Then, head to Khamlia, where Gnawa musicians—descendants of West African slaves—play soulful rhythms on hand drums. Next, venture to the ghostly ruins of Mefes, an abandoned lead-mining town.
Then, visit a nomad family living on the edge of the dunes. Share stories over camel milk and learn about desert survival. Return to camp for lunch, or opt for an adrenaline-fueled ATV ride across the dunes for an additional cost. As evening falls, relax under the infinite sky, or climb a dune once more to witness another spectacular sunset.
Day 4: Merzouga → Erfoud → Todra Gorges → Dades Valley
After breakfast, say goodbye to the desert and head west to Erfoud. This town is renowned for its fossil workshops, where ancient marine creatures are carved into exquisite works of art.
Continue along the Todra River to the Todra Gorges, towering limestone canyons up to 300 meters high, where you can stroll along the riverbank or try beginner-friendly rock climbing.
In the afternoon, follow the Valley of the Roses road to the Dades Valley, where rosewater distilleries dot the fragrant pink landscape. Check into your hotel, which is perched above ochre cliffs. Enjoy dinner as the last light of the day dances on the valley walls.
Day 5: Dades Valley → Ouarzazate → Kelaa Mgouna → Skoura → Marrakech
Savor a final Moroccan breakfast with valley views, then re-board your vehicle for the journey home. Stop at Kelaa Mgouna—the “Rose Capital”—to witness locals producing rose petals and oils in traditional cooperatives.
Pass through the palm groves of Skoura, dotted with ancient Kasbahs, before returning to Ouarzazate for a photo stop at the film studios or the Taourirt Kasbah. Cross the Tizi n’Tichka pass once more, watching the High Atlas’s rugged peaks retreat into your rearview. You’ll arrive back in Marrakech by early evening, dropped off at your riad with memories of mountains, kasbahs, and Saharan nights etched forever in your mind.
