Itinerary – 4 Days tour from Marrakech to Fes
Day 1 – Over the High Atlas to Aït Benhaddou and Ouarzazate, then into Dades Valley
The trip begins with an early pickup in Marrakech. You will climb slowly through the High Atlas over the famous Tizi n’Tichka pass (2,260 m), winding past red and ochre peaks. You’ll stop at scenic overlooks along the way.
Take in the panoramic views of the mountains and deep valleys below. Once a caravan route, with rocky villages and terraced fields clinging to the hillsides, this road is as spectacular as any Moroccan postcard.
Midday brings Aït Benhaddou, the emblematic adobe fortress of Ksar on the Ounila River. Described as “a striking example of southern Moroccan architecture,” Aït Benhaddou’s sunset light on its ochre walls is unforgettable as you wander through its narrow streets, past its ancient granaries and towers. After lunch, continue east, passing the film studios of Ouarzazate (the “Hollywood of Morocco”) and the lush Rose Valley.
In the evening, you will descend into the Dades Valley, arriving at your guesthouse amidst the rugged gorges.
Dades is famous for its winding river gorges and dramatic rock formations; you may see herds of goats and mud-brick kasbahs along the way, overnight near Dades Gorges.
Day 2 – From Dades Gorge and Todra to the Dunes of Erg Chebbi at Merzouga
After enjoying breakfast with sweeping views of the Dades Gorge, your tour from Marrakech to the Merzouga Desert continues through winding canyons toward the Todra Gorge.
There, you will see sheer limestone walls that soar nearly 300 meters overhead. A gentle walk along the cool riverbed offers spectacular photo opportunities.
Then, head east to Erfoud, Morocco’s fossil capital. There, you will see ancient marine life preserved in stone.
Then, you will drive on toward the towering Erg Chebbi dunes of Merzouga. As the sun sets, you will mount your camel for a 90-minute trek into the Sahara and watch the dunes glow gold and crimson.
Your desert camp awaits, where you will enjoy mint tea, a hearty dinner, and Berber drumming around the fire. This sets the scene for an extraordinary night beneath a canopy of stars.
Day 3 – Sunrise, Nomad Encounters and Hidden Gems of the Black Desert
Rise before dawn to witness an unforgettable Sahara sunrise from your camp’s terrace, then enjoy a traditional breakfast under the desert sky.
After returning to Merzouga by camel, venture off the beaten path along the old Paris–Dakar rally route into the “Black Desert,” a moonscape of volcanic rock and ochre sands. At mid-morning, reach a hilltop viewpoint for sweeping panoramas of Erg Chebbi.
Then, enjoy tea with a Gnawa ensemble in a local village where West African rhythms echo across the sands. Next, visit the abandoned hamlet of Mefis to see relics of French colonial mining.
Then, a short drive will lead you to a nomadic family’s tent where you can share stories and learn about traditional desert living.
As the afternoon light softens the dunes once more, return to Merzouga for an afternoon at leisure—perhaps take a spin on a quad bike among the dunes or enjoy a quiet stroll before dinner and a second night in your desert oasis.
Day 4 – Through Ziz Valley and Cedar Forests to Historic Fes
After breakfast, head north through the lush palm groves of Tafilalet, where the Ziz River has carved out verdant oases against the backdrop of the desert.
Stop at a high-ridge viewpoint overlooking the valley and the town of Aoufous for photos before continuing to Midelt, the “Apple Capital” of Morocco, for lunch amidst the Atlas Mountains.
In the afternoon, you will see the Atlas cedars of Azrou, where you may catch a glimpse of playful Barbary macaques among the trees.
A brief detour to Ifrane, nicknamed “Moroccan Switzerland” for its alpine architecture and pristine parks, offers a surprising European twist.
Finally, as the sun sets over the rolling hills, you arrive in Fes. Our driver will escort you to your riad, bid you farewell, and leave you with memories of mountains, desert dunes, and the warm heart of Morocco.
