Tour Highlights

Itinerary – 4 Days tour from Marrakech to Merzouga

Day 1: Marrakech – Aït Benhaddou – Ouarzazate – Dades Valley [315 km]

We will depart from Marrakech at sunrise and cross the 2,260-meter-high Tizi N’Tichka Pass into the High Atlas Mountains. As the peaks recede, the ochre Ait Benhaddou kasbah comes into view.

There, we will explore the winding, clay alleys of this ancient, fortified village, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a quintessential Moroccan montage. In the warm afternoon light, its mud-brick towers glow rust-orange.

From there, we continue to Ouarzazate, known as the “Hollywood of Morocco.” Our guide will show us the Atlas Studios, but more importantly, we will savor the view of the Dra’a Valley, dotted with kasbahs and palm groves.

Late in the afternoon, we drive out of Ouarzazate into the Dades Valley, a surprising green ribbon of river and palms against red-rock hills. As we wind along the river, we pass lush terraced fields and crumbling kasbahs until we reach our hotel, which is perched on the canyon’s edge. As night falls over the valley, we receive a quiet, star-filled welcome to the desert hinterland.

At dawn, we set out further into the Dades Valley. The locals call it the “Valley of a Thousand Kasbahs.” In the soft morning light, the road winds past gnarled walnut orchards, jagged red cliffs, and villages carved by rivers.

The colors of the gorge walls glow in layers of pink and ochre. We stopped at a lookout over the Dades Gorge to take photos of the dramatic curves of the landscape. Next, we drove to the Todra Gorge, arriving by midday to find a sudden, narrow canyon.

Sheer limestone cliffs, up to 300 meters tall, rose on either side of a palm-studded oasis. Here, you can walk into the gorge and hear the echoes of ages past. After having lunch in the nearby village of Tinerhir, we climb aboard our camels.

By late afternoon, we approach the dunes of Merzouga. This small town is known as the gateway to the Erg Chebbi sand sea. We trek into the dunes on our camels just in time for sunset.

As the sky transforms to pink and gold, the camel caravan winds its way to a desert camp. Under the clear night sky, we enjoy a Berber dinner around a fire before retiring to our tents for an unforgettable night sleeping under millions of desert stars.

As the sun rises, the desert transforms into a sea of orange sand. After breakfast at the campsite, we take a camel trek back to Merzouga to pick up our vehicle. Today, we drive west across the High Atlas Plateau.

We pause at Alnif, a fossil hotspot. The area’s striking rock formations are strewn with ancient fossils, including Devonian trilobites and coral, some of which are over 400 million years old. These remarkable fossils can be found in local shops, offering a glimpse into the region’s rich geological history.

In fact, “Ordovician trilobites, about 450 million years old, may be found in abundance around Alnif.” The town’s fossil market is legendary among collectors As we leave Alnif, we descend into a grove of palm trees. Soon, we arrive in Nkob, a Berber village famous for its 45 kasbahs and lush oases.

The ochre walls of the old kasbahs tower above rows of date palms, creating a classic desert oasis scene. After lunch, we continue along the scenic road to Agdz, located at the edge of the Drâa Valley.

Here, palms stretch as far as the eye can see — an emerald ribbon against the harsh desert landscape. We visit a traditional mud-brick kasbah before heading north through the foothills and reentering the drier, red-stone landscape en route to Ouarzazate. By evening, we are back in Ouarzazate, ready to rest for our final day.

On our way back, we will climb into the High Atlas Mountains again via the Tizi N’Tichka Pass. The road winds through barren mountainsides and small Berber villages, offering panoramic views of snow-capped peaks, especially in winter.

As we descend into the palm oases of the Ourika Valley, we are greeted by the warm air of Marrakech. In the afternoon, we will arrive in the Red City and end our tour back at your riad or hotel in Marrakech. We’ve traveled through Morocco’s highlights — from mountain villages to Sahara dunes — on a personalized, private journey.
