Tour Highlights

Itinerary – 5 Days tour from Tangier to Merzouga

Day 1: Tangier → Chefchaouen → Fes (≈305 km; ~5 h)

You will be picked up from your Tangier hotel at 8:00 a.m. and will begin by exploring the Kasbah Palace Museum, which was once a sultan’s residence overlooking the Strait of Gibraltar. Wander through its courtyards, which are adorned with Roman relics and Mediterranean art, before heading inland through the lush Rif foothills.

By late morning, you will arrive in Chefchaouen, Morocco’s “Blue Pearl,” where the narrow lanes and blue-washed walls will invite you to stop and take endless photos.

Savor mint tea in Plaza Uta el-Hammam, then hike to the Ras el-Ma spring, where mountain waters trickle into town. After a leisurely lunch of regional specialties, continue the drive south through verdant valleys to Fes.

As dusk falls, check into a riad nestled within the medieval medina. From its rooftop terrace, enjoy twilight views of ancient minarets.

After breakfast, your private driver will guide you into the Middle Atlas Mountains. You will pause in Ifrane, Morocco’s “Little Switzerland,” to stroll through manicured parks and admire Alpine-style buildings.

Next, you will enter the cedar forest of Azrou, where troops of Barbary macaques forage among centuries-old cedars. Then, continue across the apple-covered highlands to Midelt for a quick riverside lunch.

Afterwards, descend into the Ziz Valley, whose canyon floor is lined with lush date palms. By late afternoon, the sands of Erg Chebbi will appear on the horizon. In the village of Merzouga, you will mount camels for a one- to two-hour trek to your desert camp. You will arrive just as the sun floods the dunes with molten gold.

Awaken before dawn and witness the pastel colors of a Sahara sunrise from atop a dune. Then, return to camp for a hearty Berber breakfast. In the midmorning, embark on a 4×4 safari through hidden desert tracks.

Stop at the Hassi Labied oasis and the seasonal Sriji Lake, where flocks of flamingos sometimes gather. Next, visit Khamlia, home to Gnawa musicians of Sub-Saharan descent. Listen to their hypnotic, percussive rhythms echoing across the sands.

After pausing for mint tea with a nomadic Berber family, sample local minerals at the Mifis mines. In the late afternoon, enjoy free time in the village of Merzouga before returning to camp for dinner, drumming, and an authentic Berber storytelling session under the Milky Way.

Rise early to witness the final Sahara dawn over the dunes, then return to Merzouga by camel or 4×4 for breakfast. Your journey then continues to Rissani, where the weekly souk is filled with dates, leather goods, and spices, offering a glimpse into local trade traditions.

From there, the road climbs into the Todra Gorge, where you will stroll alongside the river beneath 300-meter-tall limestone walls draped in date palms. After lunch, follow the Road of a Thousand Kasbahs into the Dades Valley.

Here, sculpted rock formations known as “Monkey Fingers” rise beside ancient mud-brick fortresses. Check into your riad, which has a terrace on the edge of a cliff with sweeping views of the valley at sunset.

This morning, explore the hidden kasbahs dotting the Dades Oasis. Then, drive to Ouarzazate, the “Gateway to the Sahara,” and photograph the Taourirt Kasbah. You may also visit the film studios.

Then, the route ascends the Tizi N’Tichka Pass through the High Atlas Mountains, offering panoramic vistas of snow-capped peaks and remote Berber villages. After stopping for lunch, arrive at Ait Ben Haddou, an iconic UNESCO ksar whose earthen towers and narrow alleyways have starred in blockbusters like Gladiator.

In the late afternoon, descend into Marrakech through its red-clay walls. Your tour concludes when you step into Jemaa el-Fnaa, where storytellers, food stalls, and lantern-lit souks pulse with life.
