Overview:
Merzouga is a remote village on the edge of the Moroccan Sahara, famous for its vast Erg Chebbi dunes. A buggy tour is a great way to experience the golden sands of the Erg Chebbi dunes. After receiving a safety briefing from your guide, you’ll climb into a two-seater buggy and roar off into the desert with the wind in your hair.
These powerful off-road vehicles let you climb to the top of tall dunes and look out over an endless sea of sand. Along the way, your friendly guides will point out hidden desert springs and take you to remote Berber hamlets, adding a rich local flavor to the adventure.
As one tour operator notes, this drive is ‘a great daytime activity that combines the thrill of driving a powerful buggy’ with visits to the most beautiful areas of the Sahara. Whether you’re traveling with family or friends, the Merzouga buggy safari offers an adrenaline-pumping experience alongside the tranquil beauty of the desert.

Itinerary – Merzouga Buggy Adventure
Merzouga village → Dune Buggy Safari
For a full-day adventure, your guide will pick you up from your hotel in the morning and give you a safety briefing. You will soon be rolling out of Merzouga and onto a track leading up into the heart of Erg Chebbi.
The buggies roar across rippling dunes and climb steep sandy slopes. Once you reach the summit of a high dune, you can pause to take in the breathtaking 360° views of the desert. At mid-morning, you stop in the shade for mint tea and biscuits, before continuing the ride.
Then it’s back on the trail, heading towards a Berber village such as Khamlia or the green oasis of Hassilabiad. Every turn reveals new desert vistas: orange dunes giving way to scrubby plateaus or bright green clusters of date palms peeking out of the sand. Later, the safari leaves the dunes behind and drives out across the rocky Hamada plateau.
Your guide can navigate the black stone flats and point out the desert’s hidden life. You will stop at lush oases with palms and springs, such as the Tissardmine and Azerkam oases, which provide welcome shade and a glimpse of desert flora.
The day’s highlight may well be Saf Saf, one of the most beautiful desert oases. Here, the Bedouin guides often prepare the traditional ‘madonna’ (Berber flatbread baked under the sand) while you enjoy a sweet mint tea.
In the afternoon, the buggy loop heads back towards Merzouga along a different route, offering fresh perspectives of the dunes.
As the sky turns pink over the sands in the late afternoon, you cruise back into Merzouga. Once the sun has set, the Milky Way fills the clear desert sky – Merzouga is so remote that it offers a truly magnificent starry sky. After a full day in the Sahara, you will return to your camp or hotel with memories of fast drives, golden dunes, and warm Berber hospitality.
