Itinerary – Day trip from Marrakech to Ourzazate

Marrakech → Aït Ben Haddou → Ouarzazate

As you depart Marrakech in a comfortable, air-conditioned 4×4, you’ll make your way through Berber villages, watching as the sky changes color and the High Atlas Mountains are bathed in a pink and gold glow as day breaks.

The ascent to Tizi N’Tichka Pass (7,414 ft) is thrilling, with hairpin turns and panoramic vistas of jagged peaks and deep valley basins. A brief stop at a roadside argan oil cooperative gives you the chance to sample freshly pressed oil and learn about the traditions of local women’s cooperatives.

As you descend into the sunlit plains, you arrive in Ouarzazate around mid-morning. There, the imposing Kasbah Taourirt, with its ornate mashrabiya screens and labyrinthine courtyards, invites you to wander its historic chambers before enjoying a leisurely coffee break while overlooking the palm groves.

By late morning, the gleaming clay walls of Ait Ben Haddou rise on a knoll above the riverbed. Cross the ancient bridge and step into a maze of narrow alleys lined with merchant houses and souvenir stalls. A local guide will share tales of caravan routes and royal processions that once passed through these gates.

You will pause atop the hill to enjoy sweeping views of the ksar against a backdrop of rolling hills. After exploring film sets where epics like Gladiator and Lawrence of Arabia were shot, you enjoy a traditional tagine lunch in a nearby guesthouse.

On the drive back to Marrakech in the afternoon, you retrace winding mountain roads framed by afternoon shadows and the scent of wild thyme. As you descend the final pass, the silhouettes of Marrakech’s minarets emerge against the backdrop of a fiery sunset, bringing your cinematic day trip to an unforgettable close.
