What to bring

Activity Highlights

Desert Lake: Dayet Srij
  • relaxing at banks of the desert lake

After meeting your local driver and guide, your Sahara 4×4 tour begins with a drive toward the stunning Lake Dayet Srij. This seasonal lake creates a beautiful blue oasis that contrasts perfectly with the surrounding desert landscape. It is a paradise for birdwatchers, where you can see wild flamingos and ducks resting in the water.

For a truly relaxing start, you have the option to grab a fresh coffee from the local mobile coffee car. There is nothing quite like sitting on the banks of the lake, sipping your drink, and taking in the peaceful views before we head deeper into the desert adventure.

Note: Because this is a seasonal lake, the water levels depend on rainfall. Please be aware that the lake can dry up during the summer months or during long periods without rain.

  • Cultural Rhythm: The Soul of Khamlia Village

After leaving the lake, our Sahara 4×4 tour continues to Khamlia, a unique village known as the home of the “Afro-Berbers.” The majority of the people living here are Afro-Moroccans, descendants of people originally brought from sub-Saharan Africa centuries ago. Over time, they have made this desert land their home, preserving their deep heritage and soulful traditions.

You will be invited into a local house to experience the heart of their culture: Gnawa Music. As you sit and enjoy a glass of traditional tea, a local group will play their spiritual rhythms using the sintir (a three-stringed lute) and qraqeb (iron castanets). This hypnotic music was once used for healing and is now recognized by UNESCO as an essential part of world heritage. It is a powerful moment of connection and a highlight of any desert journey.

The Ghost Town and Ancient Mines of M’fis
  • The Ghost Town and Ancient Mines of M’fis

Leaving the village behind, we drive deeper into the desert, heading toward the Algerian border to reach the historic site of M’fis. This area is famous for its abandoned “Ghost Town”—a settlement from the French colonial era. While the village is now quiet and mostly empty, it remains a strategic location and still serves as a base for the local military.

We will explore the M’fis mines, where you can see the deep shafts used to extract minerals like Kohl (traditional eyeliner), lead, and zinc. While many of the old French mines are now part of history, some areas are still active today, with local miners continuing to extract these precious minerals from the earth. Walking through the ruins gives you a powerful look at the industrial past of the Sahara and the tough, resilient spirit of the people who worked here.

  • Meeting the Desert Nomads

Next, we journey into the vast stone desert to visit a local Nomadic family. These resilient communities move across the Sahara throughout the year, searching for fresh grazing land and water for their herds of camels, goats, and sheep.

You will be welcomed into a traditional “House of Hair”—a unique tent hand-woven from camel and goat hair. This natural material is highly effective, providing cool shade in the heat and protection during the rare desert rains. Inside the comfort of the tent, you will share a glass of traditional tea, the ultimate symbol of Saharan hospitality.

During your visit, you will learn about their daily lives: how they weave durable carpets and clothes, how they cook over open fires, and how they have thrived in the heart of the desert for generations. It is a humbling and beautiful experience that shows the true spirit of the Moroccan people.

  • A Desert Delicacy: The Traditional Berber Pizza

After our time with the Nomadic family, we head back toward the village for a local culinary highlight: the Berber Pizza, known locally as Madfouna. This dish is the soul of Saharan cooking and a “must-try” for any visitor.

Historically, Madfouna was the perfect meal for Nomads traveling through the desert. They would prepare the dough and meat, then bake it directly in the hot sand and embers of a campfire. Today, while we enjoy this delicious meal prepared in traditional ovens, it still keeps its deep historical roots and authentic flavor. Stuffed with fresh meat, onions, and a special blend of Saharan spices, it is the perfect way to recharge after a morning of adventure.

Taste an authentic Madfouna (Berber Pizza) lunch prepared by local villagers.
  • Hassilabied Oasis: A Green Paradise

Before ending our Sahara 4×4 tour, we visit the peaceful Hassilabied Oasis. You can take a relaxing stroll under the shade of the palm trees and learn about the traditional irrigation system managed by the local community. It is a desert miracle—the spring water flows directly from the heart of the dunes to nourish the local gardens.

We will also stop at the camel park, where many camels are kept by local families. They stay here to be close to the fresh water of the oasis. It is the perfect final view of desert life before we return you to your accommodation.

FAQ / Extra Details

Yes! Children usually love the 4×4 adventure. It is much less tiring for them than a long camel trek, and they enjoy visiting the musicians in Khamlia and seeing the camels at the oasis.

Most of the tour is by car, but there are short, easy walks at the Ghost Town mines and through the Hassilabied Oasis. You can walk as much or as little as you feel comfortable with.

We use comfortable, air-conditioned 4×4 vehicles (such as a Toyota Land Cruiser or similar). These are specifically maintained for desert terrain to ensure a safe and smooth ride through the dunes and rocky plains.
