Tour Highlights

Itinerary – 4 Days Tour from Errachidia to Marrakech

Day 1: Errachidia → Erfoud → Merzouga

Your adventure begins with a morning pickup in Errachidia. As you wind through the lush date-palm corridors of the Ziz Valley, you’ll see the river’s turquoise ribbon glinting beneath cavernous red cliffs.

In Erfoud, you’ll visit a fossil workshop and examine ancient ammonites and trilobites that are 500 million years old beneath the desert sun.

As you continue toward Merzouga, the terrain gradually shifts to ochre sands and sparse acacias, proof of the Sahara’s encroachment. Late in the afternoon, camel riders will be waiting to lead you across the Erg Chebbi dunes.

You will climb a towering crest and watch the sun transform the rippling sand into a sea of fire and shadow. As darkness falls, your luxury desert camp comes alive with the glow of lanterns and the sound of Berber drums under a dazzling canopy of stars.

Awaken to the desert’s quiet as dawn creeps across the dunes, painting each grain rose-gold. After breakfast in your tent, board a 4×4 for an off-road expedition.

First, visit a subterranean “eyeliner” mine where iron-oxide pigments were once gathered. Then, visit a nomadic family in their woven tent and share mint tea and freshly baked flatbread with them.

Learn how Berber traditions endure amid the shifting sands. Then, travel to Khamlia, home to sub-Saharan Gnaoua musicians whose rhythmic music echoes through the date palm groves at midday.

After having lunch by the seasonal salt lake in Merzouga, which is a magnet for migratory birds, stroll beneath towering palm canopies before returning to camp for an optional sunset camel ride or sandboarding adventure.

Head east through Rissani’s bustling market, where the air is filled with the scents of spices and merchants in flowing djellabas. There, you’ll catch a glimpse of the resplendent Mausoleum of Moulay Ali Cherif, ancestor of Morocco’s Alaouite dynasty, adorned with green tiles and horseshoe arches.

Then, the road threads through the dramatic canyon of Todra Gorge, where sheer limestone walls soar 300 meters overhead.

Here, you can enjoy a scenic walk and rare rock-climbing vistas. After enjoying lunch beneath the rust-red cliffs, continue along the “Road of a Thousand Kasbahs,” stopping at traditional villages where mud-brick fortresses stand like sentinels.

Arrive in the Dades Valley by sunset, where the terrace of your riad overlooks the sculpted contours of the canyon set ablaze by the dying light.

This morning, drive along the winding road to Ouarzazate and pause at the fortified village of Ait Ben Haddou. Its honey-toned, earthen walls glimmer in the desert sun and have been featured in films ranging from Gladiator to Game of Thrones.

Explore its secret passages, palm-shaded courtyards, and rooftop perches. Then, ascend the 7,414-foot Tizi N’Tichka Pass through the High Atlas Mountains, where you can see snow-tipped peaks peeking through swirling clouds.

The descent yields sweeping views of ochre plains dotted with argan trees as you approach Marrakech’s red-walled medina.

Conclude your odyssey in the pulsating heart of Jemaa el-Fna, where snake charmers, storytellers, and spice stalls vie for your attention. Enjoy a final rooftop dinner overlooking the Koutoubia Mosque’s silhouette against an apricot sky.

Frequently Asked Questions

How comfortable is the camel ride?

Camels move slowly on flat paths; rides last 1–2 hours with regular stops. Handlers assist with mounting and dismounting—ideal for first-timers.

Merzouga’s landscape is dramatic, with towering dunes, scorching sun, and the occasional camel giving you side-eye, but it’s not a lawless wasteland. It’s one of the most tourist-friendly areas in Morocco.
