Three days, two very different nights, and a handful of Morocco’s most cinematic landscapes — guided by locals who call this desert home.

Escape the city for three unforgettable days through southern Morocco. Leaving Marrakech, the road climbs over the Tizi n'Tichka pass in the High Atlas mountains and descends into a landscape of palm oases, earthen kasbahs and deep-cut gorges before reaching the golden dunes of Erg Chebbi at Merzouga.

You'll walk the UNESCO-listed streets of Ait Benhaddou, stand at the rim of the Dades and Todra gorges, and ride a camel into the Sahara as the sun drops behind the dunes. Nights are spent in a Dades Valley kasbah and a private desert camp, where Berber hosts share tea, music and stories beneath a sky thick with stars.

Every day balances scenic driving with time out of the vehicle to walk, photograph and experience the desert at its own pace.

Day

1 Marrakech to the Dades Valley

Route: Marrakech → Tizi n’Tichka → Ait Benhaddou → Ouarzazate → Dades

We leave Marrakech early and climb into the Atlas on one of Morocco’s most scenic roads. After exploring the mud-brick kasbah of Ait Benhaddou, we continue past Ouarzazate and through rose-growing valleys to the dramatic Dades Gorge, where we settle in for the night at a traditional kasbah guesthouse.

2 Gorges, Palms & the Sahara Dunes

Route: Dades → Todra Gorge → Tinghir → Erfoud → Merzouga (Erg Chebbi)

A morning of deep canyons gives way to desert as we head east. By late afternoon we reach the dunes of Merzouga, swap our wheels for camels, and ride into the Sahara. Dinner is served at a desert camp, followed by Berber music under the stars.

3 Sunrise Over the Dunes & Return to Marrakech

Route: Merzouga → Khamlia → Rissani → Marrakech

Watch the desert wake in pink and amber light, then begin the long, beautiful drive back. We break the journey with a stop at Khamlia for Gnawa rhythms, before climbing back over the mountains to Marrakech, arriving in the early evening.

Cash & ATMs

Bring Moroccan dirhams in cash. ATMs become scarce past Ouarzazate, and small shops and cooperatives rarely accept cards.

Limited connectivity

Mobile signal and wifi are patchy in the mountains and desert. Let family know you may be offline for a few hours at a time.

Dress respectfully

Light clothing that covers shoulders and knees is appreciated when visiting kasbahs, cooperatives and Berber villages.

Winding mountain roads

The Atlas roads have many curves. If you're prone to motion sickness, sit near the front and bring your usual medication.

Layered, breathable clothing — it is hot by day and can drop close to freezing in the desert at night. Bring a warm jacket or fleece, long trousers, a hat, sunglasses and sunscreen, comfortable walking shoes, a small daypack, a reusable water bottle, a headlamp and a power bank. A scarf or shemagh helps against wind-blown sand.

The best time to visit is during the cooler months from October to April, when daytime temperatures are pleasant and comfortable for outdoor activities and desert camping.

Soft bags or duffels are strongly recommended over rigid suitcases, especially if you are traveling in 4x4 vehicles or transferring to camels, as they fit much easier into transport.
